Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA) has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Family Support Liaison serving the Lexington, KY area. The Family Support Liaison handles activities related to the support and assistance of families facing the sudden death of a loved one in the hospital setting. This includes assuring that the family's informational, physical and emotional needs are being met, and the overall process positively impacts the outcome for organ and tissue donation. Considerable travel in the assigned area is expected. Significant on-call responsibility is required.

Specific duties and responsibilities may include:

  • Provide on-call availability to respond to potential donor situations.
  • Support family directly and through hospital resources including clarifying and reinforcing communication regarding the patient's status, test results and prognosis.
  • Prepare family for brain death determination as well as clarifying and reinforcing patient's status following testing.
  • Provide support to family and assist in preparation to make end of life decisions.
  • Ensure Donor Designation is determined and incorporate honoring the wishes the donor.
  • Provide counseling to the family regarding donation options.
  • Support the family in closure rituals and assists them in preparation for their departure from the hospital, regardless of the decision about donation.
  • Maintain documentation on case specifics and participate in case reviews.

Skills and Qualifications:

Education

  • College degree (Associate or Bachelor's level) in allied health, education, business, sales or marketing, pastoral care, psychology or related field required.
  • Applicants with unfinished secondary education may be considered with related experience and willingness to complete course of study.

Experience

  • Three years of experience in marketing, communication, teaching, health care, counseling, pastoral career other public service-related required.
  • Hospice care, bereavement counseling, pastoral counseling, social work, organ or tissue donation and other helping professions are examples of the training and experience relevant to this position.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Requires the ability to work empathetically, compassionately and professionally with families in crisis.
  • Must have the ability to develop effective professional relationships, possess excellent communication skills and demonstrate the ability to quickly understand the culture and dynamics of a family and work effectively within it.
  • Must have strong interest in support services to others and the desire to be a front-line team member of an organization whose mission is to help others through organ donation and transplantation.
